Morrisons: The UK’s Fourth Largest Supermarket Chain
Morrisons, or to give it its full name, Wm Morrison Supermarkets Plc, is the fourth biggest supermarket chain in the UK, with its headquarters in West Yorkshire. Originally founded at the end of the 19th century, this retailer started out in Bradford’s Rawson Market as a stall selling eggs and butter, but today, it is a major brand that has become a household name. Today, there are around 500 stores nationwide, as well as a store in Gibraltar—the only overseas presence of this brand, driven by the number of British expats and military service staff and families at this location. They are usually large supermarkets but have expanded to include smaller convenience stores under the ‘Morrisons Daily’ brand, so you can be sure to find everything you’re looking for here. You can find fresh fruit and vegetables, a fish market, a bakery stall, a fresh pizza and hot goods counter, and a butcher’s and cheese section. In the aisles, you’ll find everything you need, including a range of alternative products to the regular own-brand items.
Until the early 2000s, most Morrisons branches were found in the North of England; however, once the retailer took over the Safeway brand in 2004, the presence of the company grew dramatically across Scotland, Wales, and the South of England. The retailer’s logo has seen a few changes over the years, with its first incarnation being a very distinctive black “M” in a yellow square. Today, the logo is more contemporary in appearance, with simple dark green lettering and a yellow leaf pattern above the “i”.
