Majestic Wine: Discovering the UK’s Leading Specialist Wine Retailer

Majestic Wine is one of the UK’s most popular and largest specialist wine retailers. It was founded in 1980 by Sheldon Graner and has a reputation for selling high-quality wines at reasonable prices. In addition to fine wine, Majestic Wine sells various other alcoholic drinks, including spirits, beer, and champagne from all over the world.

Majestic Wine Opening Times And Store Locations

There are over 200 Majestic stores across the UK. They are located in many cities and towns, including London, Bristol, and Edinburgh. Stores are commonly located on high streets, shopping centres, and retail parks.

Majestic Wine store opening times are generally from 10 am to 8 pm, Monday through Friday; 10 am to 7 pm on Saturdays; and 10 am to 5 pm on Sundays. However, opening hours vary by location and can change during holidays such as New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and bank holidays. Use the store locator on our website to find the exact opening times for a nearby store that’s open now.

When looking for one of their stores in the streets, try to spot its logo. Their logo displays Majestic’ in white letters with a bunch of grapes in green next to the name.

5 Interesting Facts About the Company

Over the years, this retailer has made a name for itself as a fine wine specialist. You may think you know quite a lot about the brand and related stores, such as Naked Wines; however, you can always learn something new. Even if people already know the following facts, we wanted to highlight them anyway because they are exciting.

  1. The organisation participated in a charity fundraiser with Alzheimer’s Research UK, which raised £50,000 to help in the fight against the disease. It did this by arranging events throughout the year, starting with a ‘Go Orange Day’ and many other activities planned throughout the day.
  2. The company continued its charitable efforts every year as it was such a success.
  3. Not content with just their stores in the UK, the company also operates two in France.
  4. The business previously owned Naked Wines, Les Celliers De Calais, Lay and Wheeler, and Majestic Wine Warehouses.
  5. Sheldon Graner, the founder, came up with the name “Majestic” as a nod to his other major love in life—collecting early stamps, mainly postage stamps of King George V and Edward VII.
Products and Services

As anyone would expect, they are most notably known for selling a stunning array of wines. People with all tastes are catered for, with most branches stocking an ample supply of reds, whites, and rosés. Along with the standard wines, there is an extensive range of champagnes, Proseccos, and other finer, more luxurious bottles. Grape-based beverages are not the only things available from the outlets, though.

Craft beer continues to be incredibly popular, and the company saw it as foolish not to stock this and many other fine beers, along with cider and spirits. In the past, they used to insist on a 6-bottle minimum order. However, they scrapped that recently to help compete with other vintners and off-licence chains.

Brief History

Sheldon Graner founded the business, then called Majestic Vintners, in 1980. He had gained experience working as a merchandiser for John Lewis. When he left there, he decided to turn his hobby and passion for wine trading and broking into a business and set the company up. The name “Majestic” referred to his other burning passion—collecting postage stamps from the days of King George V and King Edward VIII. The design for the original logo was based on 1929 King George V stamps.

It makes sense to highlight that wine was only generally bought through specialist wine retailers or off-licences. Sheldon saw a gap, decided to sell wine from a warehouse, and initially started with a 12-bottle minimum purchase order. That was to comply with the licensing laws of the time. One of the most significant innovations the company became known for was wine tasting before buying. The first outlet opened in Harringay, and then one in Battersea followed, and they had a steady increase over the next couple of decades.
