Discover Lincoln: Shops, Restaurants & Highlights

Lincoln is famous for its hilltop cathedral and medieval castle. It is a historic city with a busy nightlife, diverse restaurants, and a quaint old town full of independent shops and cobbled streets. It’s a city that’s proud of its history while embracing modernity with a large population of students and a thriving arts scene.

Shopping in Lincoln

From boutiques, cheese shops, and knick-knacks in the old town to shopping malls and a bustling high street, Lincoln offers a wide range of shopping experiences.

Mainstream Shopping
On the High Street in the city centre, all well-known brands and familiar stores can be found within easy reach of one another.

Luxury Shopping
While there’s no one set area for luxury shopping, head up to the top of the old town, near the cathedral, for some high-end exclusive stores.

Boutique Shops
The cobbled hill of the old town is the place to go for quirky little shops and independent boutiques. This is where you’ll find something unique and unusual.

Shopping Centres & Retail Parks
Right on the High Street in the middle of town is the Waterside Shopping Centre, filled with high street names and fast food. On the other side of the river, past the train station, is St Mark’s Shopping Centre, an older shopping mall with lots of parking available. Out of town, in the Birchwood area, is the Birchwood Shopping Centre, which is more like a mini retail park with a post office, supermarket, and homeware stores.

Restaurants in Lincoln

With a good selection of chain restaurants, world foods, and independents, there’s something for all dining needs in Lincoln.

Traditional Cuisine
In the city centre, in the new town area of Lincoln, you’ll find fish & chip restaurants, and cosy eateries serving traditional dishes like burgers and all-day breakfasts.

High-End Dining
In the shadow of the cathedral, in the Cathedral Quarter of the city, Michelin-starred restaurants and fine dining eateries sit in magnificent surroundings.

Casual or Trendy Spots
Head to The Strait, the quaint street that connects the Cathedral Quarter with the new town, for independent eateries and quirky restaurants.

Food Markets
Close to the High Street, Cornhill Market is an indoor food market with fruit and veg stalls, an Asian supermarket, a farm shop, an ice cream stall, and takeaways.

Landmarks and Attractions

A small city with a lot to offer, Lincoln has some impressive historical attractions and landmarks, plus family-friendly things to see and do.

  • Lincoln Cathedral: This beautiful cathedral on the hill, where you can wander around or take a guided tour.
  • Lincoln Castle: An 11th-century castle with a Victorian prison housing an original copy of the Magna Carta.
  • Doddington Hall: Stately home in Doddington with an onsite restaurant, farm shop, wine shop, and holiday cottages.
  • Hartsholme Country Park: To the southwest of the city centre, this quiet park has woodland walks and wildlife spotting.
Popular Neighbourhoods in Lincoln

Cornhill Quarter
Within walking distance of the train station, this entertainment hub has a cinema, shopping, and restaurants.

Brayford Waterfront
Once a busy inland port and now a student area, here you’ll find breweries, pubs, and a scenic canal.

Cathedral Quarter
With the cathedral at its heart, this old town area features family-run shops and cafes and the must-visit castle.

Doddington
This quaint rural area, famous for its stately home, has an animal centre, nature park, and plenty of good walks.

How to Get to Lincoln

Public Transport
Lincoln has a reliable bus service to get you in and out of the city, though some rural areas will see more infrequent services. Trains from London take between 2 and 3 hours, depending on which service you choose. From Manchester, it takes around 2 and a half hours by train.

Driving Directions
It’s a similar story by car, taking around 3 hours 20 minutes from London, up the M11 and the A1, and around two and a half hours from Manchester, via Sheffield.

Walking/Cycling
Being a compact city, Lincoln is very walkable and has good pedestrian routes. A walk up to the old town does feature a steep hill, so it might not be easy for anyone with mobility issues. It’s a very cycle-friendly city, with many designated routes. The surrounding areas are great for cyclists, and the terrain is mostly flat.

Parking in Lincoln
There’s a good range of parking options in the city, both long-stay and short-stay, with NCP multi-storey car parks and open-air smaller car parks around the city. If you’re visiting the cathedral, it is possible to find free parking a few streets away.

A great place to visit! Lincoln has a large variety of things to do and places to visit. A personal favourite of mine is the cathedral. The grounds are extensive and the building is filled with historical intrigue. Lincoln also has a great range of places to eat and shop!
