Day-Lewis Pharmacy: A Family-Owned UK Pharmacy Chain
Day Lewis Pharmacy is a family-owned business that dispenses prescription medication to people as prescribed by their doctors. They also offer over-the-counter drugs, health advice, and vaccinations.
Built with a mission to help people be as healthy as possible, the pharmacy wants to offer customers friendlier and more personal experiences. This is in direct competition with pharmacies such as Boots or Lloyds.
You can expect to find an extensive range of health and wellness products, including first aid items, hair care, dental care, foot care, cosmetics, and toiletries.
They operate over 300 branches across the UK, primarily on high streets and in health centres. Most locations are concentrated in southern England, especially around major cities like London and nearby towns.
Day Lewis’ opening times are typically from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, and it remains closed on Sundays.
Hours may vary depending on the location, especially during national and bank holidays, such as Christmas and Boxing Day, with reduced hours on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Find a pharmacy nearby that’s open today using the branch locator.

Over the years, the group has racked up various awards and achievements for its excellent customer and employee service. Here are just five facts you might not know about this independent chain:
- In 2014, the late founder, Kirit Patel MBE, won the CEO of the Year award at the PwC Private Business Awards.
- The pharmacy group has implemented barcode scanners in all establishments in an initiative against counterfeit drugs. These scanners are used on all medicines that enter their shops to ensure authenticity. Staff are also trained to check for tampering on seals.
- In 2013, the group established an annual charity day. Each pharmacy can choose a local charity to raise money for every year.
- The company employs over 2,700 people across the UK and believes in training and developing its employees so they can rise in the company. They were awarded a gold “Investors in People” accreditation in 2013.
- Despite its size, this pharmacy group is still very much family-run, with the family of both founders taking critical roles in the business.
In addition to dispensing prescriptions from health professionals, pharmacies offer a host of other services and products to their customers.
Every pharmacy sells health essentials, including painkillers, indigestion tablets, cough medicines, and any other over-the-counter medicines you would expect from a pharmacy. There are also items such as skincare, nappies, and toiletries.
You can check your blood pressure, BMI, and blood glucose at your location for health checks. Employees can also give advice on weight management, blood sugar management, and how to lower your cholesterol—all of which are essential to keeping your heart healthy.
One of the most popular services offered by these pharmacies is their NHS minor ailments clinic. This clinic offers advice on conditions such as eczema, sore throats, and hay fever without the need to make an appointment with your doctor.
The company has also launched an ‘online doctor’ service.
The Day Lewis Pharmacy group was founded by brothers JC Patel and Kirit Patel MBE in 1975 and has evolved greatly since then. From that one little English store, the company now operates hundreds of branches across the UK.
The pharmacy started out as a simple shop offering a pharmacy dispensary. Since then, the company has transformed into a pioneering business that dispenses prescriptions and offers its own healthcare provisions.
The company currently operates its online doctor service, allowing customers to receive prescriptions for specific ailments online.
