The Range: From Market Stall to Retail Empire
Considered by many to be one of the fastest-growing retailers in the United Kingdom, The Range sells a variety of products. These include the home, garden, fashion, health and beauty, and baby and children categories. It is renowned for providing customers with a wide range of excellent quality goods at some of the most competitive prices.
The Range has over 200 stores in the UK and Ireland. Stores are in major towns and cities, including London, Birmingham, and Glasgow. They are primarily found in retail and business parks.
The Range Opening Times vary per location. Generally, they are open from 9 am to 8-9 pm, Monday through Saturday, and from 10 am to 7 pm on Sundays. However, these hours vary by location and during public holidays like Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, and Easter. Check the specific opening times of your local store to see if they are open today before visiting.
When looking for one of their locations on the street, try to spot their storefront and logo. The storefront is mostly dark blue, and their logo shows an orange 'R' encircled. The store name is next to the logo, and "The" is placed in small lettering above "Range" in white letters. Most often, their main offerings, "Home, Leisure, Garden", are future underneath the brand name in a smaller font.
It has been a meteoric rise for The Range, and for the store's interest, here are five interesting facts about the retailer and its founder:
- The company can now deliver to more than 27 different countries.
- Founder Chris Dawson started selling goods from the back of a truck in Tavistock during the 1980s; he is now worth more than a billion pounds.
- The first superstore was opened in 1989 in Plymouth.
- Dawson once bought £68 million worth of old MFI stock for just £3 million.
- More than 11,000 people currently work for the company.
They offer an extensive range of products across a variety of categories, including furniture, home furnishings, household, garden, DIY, pets, leisure, stationery, arts, appliances, electrical, clothing, health and beauty, and toys. All of their products are offered to customers at discount prices compared to other leading retailers, and this is a big factor in the quick rise to prominence of this retail chain.
The stock sold at their stores is a mix of unbranded, branded, and own-branded products, all of which are claimed to be of great quality at a great price. They can deliver anywhere in the UK and are known for having low-cost delivery charges.
Chris Dawson was a wheeler-dealer market tradesman who used to buy and sell anything he could get his hands on until he finally saved up enough money to open his first retail store. That would be in the Sugar Mill Business Park in Plymouth and, at the time, was called C.D.S Superstores.
After continued success in the first few years and the opening of further stores, Dawson changed its name to its current name. The founder, Chris Dawson, has been recognized as one of the top entrepreneurs in the UK by Management Today and, thanks mainly to his retail chain, is now worth upwards of £1 billion.
