Discover Doncaster: Shops, Restaurants & Highlights

Having received its city status in 2022, Doncaster is growing and thriving, with a blossoming arts scene, quiet country parks, and unique places to eat and shop. For a small city, there’s an impressive amount of museums and attractions, and although it’s not typically a tourist destination, this new city is beginning to welcome more and more visitors.

Shopping in Doncaster

Known primarily for its shopping centres, the city also has some hidden gem boutique shops and quirky stores.

Mainstream Shopping
Head to the pedestrianised High Street in the city centre for well-known brands and familiar stores. This pleasant area of town has cafes and take aways and makes a good day out shopping.

Luxury Shopping
There isn’t one area of town where luxury shops stand, apart from in the shopping centres, but take a wander down Priory Walk just off High Street and you’ll find a few high end stores.

Boutique Shops
In the south of the city boutique shops are dotted along Carr House Road and Stockil Road, covering mostly unique fashion and unusual accessories.

Shopping Centers & Retail Parks
Straight off the train at Doncaster Station, you enter the Frenchgate Centre, the city’s most popular shopping centre, packed with high street stores and cafes. For something a little different, head out to Lakeside, where this open air retail park by the lake offers outlet stores with deals and discount prices on familiar brands. It’s a picturesque area for a day out, where you can bag a bargain.

Restaurants in Doncaster

The up and coming city of Doncaster offers a variety of different restaurant types, from chains and pubs to an impressive range of independent restaurants and world foods. You might have to venture out of the city centre for high end dining, but it’s worth the journey.

Traditional Cuisine
Right in the city centre, around Doncaster’s central square, is where you’ll find comforting and traditional restaurants serving fish and chips, all day breakfasts and steak & chips.

High-End Dining
While there are handful of high end restaurants in the centre of Doncaster, for something really special head to the south east of the city, to Rossington and Bawtry.

Casual or Trendy Spots
Most of the casual restaurants and trendy spots can be found close to the Frenchgate Centre and the train station, but head up to Broxholme Lane for more unusual restaurants, including a great Bulgarian.

Food Markets
Doncaster market, in the centre of the city, is famous for its incredible array of food stalls, including butchers, seafood, fishmongers, fruit & veg, and delis.

How to Get to Doncaster

Public Transport
The bus service throughout Doncaster can be a little unreliable. While it’s easy to get around on buses and they serve all regions, many are infrequent, especially when travelling to the surrounding areas of the city. There are direct trains from London to Doncaster, and it only takes an hour and a half, making it an easy city to travel to by train.

Driving Directions
By comparison, driving from London to Doncaster can take around 4 hours, depending on traffic, and from Manchester it takes around 2 hours.

Walking/Cycling
Doncaster is a small and compact city centre, so it’s very easy to walk around, but the surrounding areas would require buses or a car to get to. Many of these out of city areas are perfect for cycling, as it’s mostly rural once you get out of the centre. You can also cycle into the city centre, as it’s a small city and very safe.

Parking in Doncaster
There’s a good amount of long stay and short stay carparks in the city, and, as it’s not a tourist city, carparks are rarely full, even at weekends. Attractions further out of the city have their own parking, which is often free.
