Poundstretcher: A Leading UK Discount Retailer

Poundstretcher is a chain of discount stores trading within the UK. They also operate a subsidiary chain called “Bargain Buys”. They run more than 350 stores across major towns and cities. Some of these stores are their main line, but they also run larger Poundstretcher Extra stores, which offer a bigger selection of products. Their products can vary quite significantly.

They sell homeware, children's toys and games, food and drinks, outdoor accessories, storage solutions, health and beauty products, clothing, and stationery. The store does sell largely unbranded products, but you can pick up items such as Disney toys in the children’s section and branded sweets and chocolate. This store also has a small refrigerated foods section where you can find milk and cheese—basic household food items. Interestingly, the company had a slight linguistic rebranding from “£-stretcher” to the current spelling of the business.

Opening Times and Store Locations

Their stores are well distributed throughout the UK and can be easily accessed by most of the population; Poundstretcher opening and closing times may vary. The cities with the most outlets include London, Glasgow, and Manchester. Identifying one of their 350-plus stores is really easy. Their establishments bear the business logo, which includes the company name written in white on a three-toned background. From left to right, the background colour shifts from red to orange to yellow. Their stores follow similar branding using yellow, white, and red colours. Some stores still have the old “£-Stretcher” branding as this has not been updated.

The majority of their stores have extended business hours and are open seven days per week, so you’re sure to discover a branch near you open today. From Monday through Friday, they are open between 8.30 am and 8 pm in larger retail centres; however, stores in city centres may close around 5 pm, the same as other shops in the area. Weekends have slightly shorter business hours as they close at 6 pm on Saturdays and are open from 10 am to 4 pm on Sundays. However, trading times may differ between stores and especially on New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Christmas, Boxing Day, and bank holidays. They may also differ in certain locations and for late-night shopping events. Use the Poundstretcher store locator to find a location open today near you.

Five Things You Didn’t Know About Poundstretcher

The company may have become part of the furniture on the UK’s high streets and in shopping centres, but there are many little facts and pieces of information that the regular customer—or not-so-regular customer—will not be aware of. These include:

  • The business was originally a subsidiary of a construction firm
  • They have an in-store pick-and-mix selection
  • Their international presence included Dubai!
  • They have more than 350 stores
  • Their first store opened more than 40 years ago
Products and Services

The chain of stores offers much the same products. They sell seasonal items to cater to changing climates and calendar events, different types of convenient items for homes, and toys and games for children. They also sell food and drink, but this includes confectionery, snacks, condiments, and staple foods rather than extensive grocery-style stock. Other popular products from their establishments include gardening tools, bedding, storage boxes, household appliances, clothing, footwear, stationery, health and beauty products, and bathing essentials. It is evident from their extensive range of products that they cater to many different shoppers. Products can be purchased in one of their stores, and prices can be consulted via their official website.

A Brief History

Stephen Fearnley and Paul Appell founded Poundstretcher in 1981. Eight years later, the company became a subsidiary of a construction firm by the name of Brown & Jackson plc, who then went on to be taken over by a South African retail giant, Pepkor. The new owners decided to release their subsidiaries apart from this chain. They attempted to rebrand to “Instore”. However, the rebranding was unsuccessful, so they changed the branding back. Other rebranding modifications followed with a series of slogan changes. They are very active on social media channels with campaigns that range from innovative to marginally offensive, sometimes coming to the attention of national media and advertising watchdogs.

The company then progressed to buy other stores from closing retailers and groups going into administration. It continues to operate under its own name and owns the subsidiary chain “Bargain Buys”.
