Jewson: One of the UK's Biggest Chains of Builders' Merchants

As one of the biggest UK chains of general builders’ merchants, Jewson sells to both small and mid-sized building contractors and to the public too. There are more than 600 branches of this chain all across the UK, and with a strong heritage dating back to the 1830s, it’s clear to see how successful this brand has become. Selling an enormous range of materials and products, this retailer also runs other operations including specialist tool hire and bathroom and kitchen centres.

When you walk into a Jewson you can not only find things to hire such as heavy duty gardening equipment like lawnmowers, rotavators and diggers, but you’ll also discover lighter equipment such as spades, protective wear and trowels. This is the ideal place to visit if you intend on carrying out any DIY in the home or garden, and you’ll be able to pick up advice on how to plan your work using the tools on offer. The store also sells building materials such as sand, soil, bricks and decorative items such as timbers and plants.

A Brief History

The Jewson brand was first launched well over a century ago by a man named George Jewson who purchased a business in 1836 in Earith in order to trade goods within the Huntingdonshire Fens district in East Anglia. The business soon expanded after his son, John Wilson Jewson, moved to Norwich in 1868 to develop a successful coal, timber and builders' merchant business. The brand has never looked back since and in October 2001, the Jewson Ltd brand (which by this point was owned by the Saint-Gobain company) was one of the UK’s top three builders merchant companies, with annual sales of more than £1 billion. Today, there are more than 600 branches which operate in locations as far afield as the Scottish islands and the furthest coasts of Cornwall, and the range has expanded beyond simply construction materials into kitchen and bathroom centres as well as tool hire services.

Jewson pride themselves on their community support and use this in their advertising material - ‘Building Better Communities’ - they sponsor local sporting teams and support local initiatives such as improvement projects. They also organise and run the UK’s largest builders convention which also bears their name.
