The Jewson brand was first launched well over a century ago by a man named George Jewson who purchased a business in 1836 in Earith in order to trade goods within the Huntingdonshire Fens district in East Anglia. The business soon expanded after his grandson, George, suggested that the business moved to Norwich where he was working with timber merchants at the time. John Jewson, the original founder’s son owned a property in Norwich and in 1868 he moved there to develop a successful coal, timber and builders merchant business. The brand has never looked back since and in October 2001, the Jewson Ltd brand (which by this point was owned by the Saint Gobain company) was one of the UK’s top three builders merchant companies, with annual sales of more than £1 billion. Today, there are more than 600 branches which operate in locations as far afield as the Scottish islands and the furthest coasts of Cornwall, and the range has expanded beyond simply construction materials into kitchen and bathroom centres as well as tool hire services.
Jewson pride themselves on their community support and use this in their advertising material - ‘Building Better Communities’ - they sponsor local sporting teams and support local initiatives such as improvement projects. They also organise and run the UK’s largest builders convention which also bears their name.
