A Brief History

Moss Samuel was a clockmaker and silversmith located in Liverpool in 1862. His daughter in law, Harriet Samuel, took over the business and stayed involved by running the administrative duties. She moved the business to Manchester and her son started to help it grow. It was her son that opened the first store by the name of H. Samuel in Preston in 1980. He then expanded the now-empire into other locations in Lancashire. Growth and success followed which meant larger headquarters were needed and the company moved again – this time to Birmingham.

The business remained in the family as Harriet Samuel’s grandchildren started running the business after World War Two. One of the grandsons was awarded a CBE and became the Sherriff of London. The company grew quickly and opened more than 200 stores across the UK and Ireland. Today, they have continued to grow the number of stores and remain part of the industry-established Signet Group who provide a very solid financial base for them to continue to build.
