British Heart Foundation: Charity Overview, Opening Times & Services
The British Heart Foundation is a registered charity in the United Kingdom that funds and produces research to help counter heart diseases. It was initially founded by medical professionals in 1961 who were highly concerned with the increasing heart-related death rate and wanted to secure extra funding for beneficial research. The organization has over 950 healthcare professionals operating throughout the UK and has developed thousands of Heartstart schemes to help educate youth about the dangers of cardiovascular diseases and best practices in emergency situations. The primary source of funds comes from legacies and wills, which account for 40% of its total income. Other funds come from voluntary contributions, the retail division, and investment income. It is now easier than ever to check opening times near you at opening-times.co.uk.
The retail division is one of the UK's market leaders. It has over 700 branches throughout the country and serves over 17 million customers every year, with continuous expansions.
With over 700 stores located nationwide, it's almost certain that you won’t have to travel far to find one. Their stores are prevalent throughout England, Scotland, and Wales, and for many, the retail staff act as the face of the charity.
As with all large charity retail institutions, the British Heart Foundation opening times differ slightly depending on the store location. However, the general opening times for stores are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Monday to Saturday, with reduced operating hours on Sunday. The charity also has online retail outlets open to customers 24 hours a day. Opening times near you may be different on bank holidays and national holidays such as Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, and Boxing Day. As one of the leading charities in the United Kingdom, the British Heart Foundation has become a household name. Various retail shops and charity fundraisers contribute to its reputation, but here are 5 things you didn’t know about the organization:
- The logo was designed by Sheila Harrison in 1971, a regional organiser at the time. It is now one of the most recognisable logos throughout the United Kingdom.
- Every year, the charity collaborates with schools nationwide to organise a skipping challenge called Jump Rope for Heart. Schools that participate in the event are able to keep 20% of all the money raised in the process.
- Various famous faces have been elected as ambassadors over the years, including the Duchess of Cambridge’s younger sister, Pippa Middleton, and the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson.
- The charity currently has six research centres throughout the UK – Imperial College London, King’s College London, University of Oxford, University of Edinburgh, University of Cambridge, and University of Glasgow.
- It spends around £100 million on research centres every year and supports over 1,000 research projects.
The retail department offers various products to consumers. Among other things, they have dedicated sections for clothing and accessories, books, gifts, cards, sports and fitness items, and Christmas goods. The charity also has a wedding section, where you can buy table decorations, guest books, invitation letters, and more.
The retail department works collaboratively with the fundraising service by selling equipment that can be worn during charity events. This means you can help raise life-saving money by simply wearing a T-shirt during your marathon, triathlon, or other events.
Set up in 1961 by medical professionals aiming to improve heart health in the UK, the British Heart Foundation has since become one of the nation’s biggest charities. With a vision to create a world free from circulatory and heart diseases, the charity has raised hundreds of millions of pounds to facilitate top-level research in the field. It has contributed to breakthrough research over the past 50 years, including successes in transplants, clot-busting drugs, and heartbeat-correcting devices.
