Bargain Booze

    Bargain Booze

Bargain Booze is a chain of off-licences which specialise in providing competitively-priced alcohol along with soft beverages, e-cigarettes and confectionary. Usually Bargain Booze has fridges stocked with a wide selection of beers, wine and alcopops of some of the best known brands, as well as multiple shelves stocked with the most popular spirits. You’ll also be able to pick up multipacks of your favourite beers, large bottles of cider, and even small kegs and wine in boxes. Some stores also offer snacks and groceries. Bargain Booze was originally established more than three decades ago and is now the largest chain of off-licences in the UK, running on an extended network of franchises. The alcohol retailer is owned by Bestway, and operates under a number of names which includes Bargain Booze Select Convenience and Thorogoods. Out of all of the different fascias in operation, the Bargain Booze franchise has the most locations and operations.

Opening Hours and Locations of Bargain Booze

As Bargain Booze is a franchise the hours of operation can vary significantly depending on the Bargain Booze branch near you. However, as a general rule, most establishments are open from 10am to 10pm, seven days a week. It’s always advisable to check the exact hours of the store as there can be regional differences. On national holidays such as New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Christmas, Boxing Day and bank holidays the opening times may be more standardised, in keeping with regulations.

Although Bargain Booze can be found all over the UK with more than 570 stores, it’s a particularly strong brand in the north of England, especially the north west. Stoke-on-Trent is the city with the highest numbers of branches, with Manchester and Liverpool also near the top of the list. All of the Bargain Booze stores are easy to identify as they have a deep red background contrasted with gold lettering. The Thorogoods franchise is slightly different but equally recognisable, with white lettering on a racing green background.

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Bargain Booze

With hundreds of stores around the country, most people have seen this off-licence retailer on the high street. Many may even have popped in for a bottle of wine or some beers. However, there’s more to this company than just the sale of cheap alcohol, such as:

    1. The company is committed to being eco-friendly and is working towards being paper-free
    2. They work with local communities in partnership with councils to provide potential employment opportunities for those who are vulnerable or less fortunate
    3. They believe in drinking alcohol responsibly and offer a reward scheme for anyone who provides information about adults buying alcohol for under-age drinkers
    4. Their customer service department is in Crewe, where their head office is located.
    5. They are exclusively a franchise operation, so divide their areas of operation so that each franchisee is not in competition with another.

    Products and Services

As their name suggests, Bargain Booze sell alcohol at a competitive price, aiming to be one of the cheapest on the market while still retaining quality. Despite being a franchise, all of their stores offer a great selection of alcoholic beverages including spirits, wine, beer, cider, lager, alcopops and shots. They particularly offer value on larger packs and boxes of alcohol, such as a box of 10 beers. Multi-offer specials can also be found regularly across the whole range of alcohol they sell.  Each franchise can negotiate their own buying and selling prices, tailoring their range to the need of the local community where they are based.

In addition to the alcohol, they also sell soft drinks, e-cigarettes, snacks and groceries. The amount of these sold varies depending on the particular outlet, as some offer a wider range of supplementary foodstuffs than others. In every store however, you will find crisps, confectionery and other snack-size edibles.

A Brief History of Bargain Booze

Bargain Booze sprang into life in 1981, when it developed from an existing wholesale spirits and wine business. Founded by Robert Mayor and Allan Whittle, the inaugural store was in Sandbach, Cheshire. It wasn’t until 7 years later that the first Bargain Booze name and franchise was launched. Since then, the business has changed hands several times, most latterly being purchased by Bestway in April 2018. It now continues to run under the franchise model, offering all of its franchisees full support with buying, marketing and logistics.
