Black Friday 2018 UK Opening Times

Black Friday is fast approaching and retailers nationwide are preparing for the yearly retail event. Over the last few years, Black Friday has become increasingly popular in the UK with stores nationwide extending their hours in order to allow shoppers to snap up goods at unbelievably low prices.

The Black Friday phenomenon dates back to as early as the 1950s when the city of Philadelphia, USA, would descend into chaos the day after Thanksgiving. Shoppers and tourists would gather in the city purchasing goods all in preparation for a Navy-Army annual football game. The day was dubbed ‘Black Friday’ as the chaotic vehicle and pedestrian traffic meant that police were made to work extra-long shifts to help deal with the bedlam. Over time, the unofficial retail holiday grew in popularity and became a nationwide event.

In 2008, Asda launched its first UK Black Friday campaign, advertising great deals and extending its hours to accommodate shoppers. Along with it came the chaos that Black Friday is widely infamous for. However, this year there has been a shift in attitude due to the heavy criticism that Black Friday faces, thanks to the chaos that it has brought with it. In response, many retailers have shifted their focus online, offering great online discounts.

Many stores nationwide will still be offering discounted Black Friday discounts, however, some stores have opted-out and instead gone for alternative campaigns, such as like Asda’s “Green is the New Black Friday Sale” the following week.
