Established by Alan Yau, this Asian restaurant takes its name from the Japanese words for self-centred and wilful, usually translated as “naughty child”. The very first restaurant was opened back in 1992 in London’s Bloomsbury. Founded by restaurateur Alan Yau, the creator of Chinese restaurants Yauatcha and Hakkasan, the brand introduced the UK to the concept of delicious and fresh Japanese food and the fun and speedy experience of the Japanese ramen bar. In 2005, the restaurant owner, Graphite Capital, sold 77.5% of the business to Lion Capital LLP for £103 million. In 2011, the chain was sold to Duke Street Capital for £215 million, showing how valuable this brand had become. There are over locations worldwide, with the vast majority in the UK’s high streets and shopping centres. In October 2018, the chain was bought by The Restaurant Group, which owns the successful chain Frankie & Benny’s. The value of the chain at that time was £559 million. With branches in several European and Middle Eastern countries, New Zealand and the USA, the brand continues to expand worldwide and is a phenomenal success.
