Scope: Championing Equality for Disabled People in the UK
Scope is a UK charity dedicated to combating negative attitudes towards disabled people. Representing all forms of disability, it focuses on achieving equality by raising awareness of the daily challenges disabled people face.
Donations are the organization’s main source of funding. Still, it has over 200 charity shops on high streets across the UK. These shops sell donated clothing, furniture, and other goods to raise additional funds to support disabled people throughout the country.
Scope operates over 200 charity shops across England and Wales, with a significant presence in London, Birmingham, and Manchester. These stores are typically situated on high streets, making them easily accessible for shoppers and donors.
Generally, Scope charity opening times are from 9 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Saturday and from 10 am to 4 pm Sunday. However, opening hours vary by location and may change during public holidays such as Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, and bank holidays. To find the exact opening times for a specific branch nearby, please use the store locator on our website.
When looking for a location on the street, try spotting its logo. Its future “Scope” is usually in white letters on a purple background.
The organization has spent almost 70 years helping disabled people, but here are five facts many may not know about this remarkable charity:
- It was formerly known as The Spastics Society and focused purely on cerebral palsy.
- The charity raises funds to help challenge attitudes regarding the over 13 million registered disabled people in the UK.
- There are currently more than 1,000 employees working for the organization.
- After costs and expenses, it has raised around £20 million a year for those in need over the past few years.
- In recent years, the charity partnered with Virgin Media in a joint bid to support 1 million disabled people in the UK to get and stay in employment by 2020.
While donations are the primary source of funding, the shops located across the UK also make a significant difference. They accept donations of second-hand goods—clothing, appliances, furniture, books, and toys—and sell them at low prices, with the earnings supporting their fundraising efforts.
Anyone wishing to donate bulky furniture or many goods can use a free collection service. This is an excellent feature if you have little time or need help to bring the items yourself.
The organization was initially formed as The Spastics Society in 1952 by parents and social workers dismayed that their disabled children were not given the right to a decent education. Over the years, it fought for other areas of equality before changing its name to support all disabilities, not just cerebral palsy.
In its early years, the charity had already helped thousands of disabled people into education and employment. Sadly, despite its excellent work, disabled people still struggle to be treated equally in terms of education and employment. However, the organization continues to push for lasting change.
