Here are five facts about this retailer that many people will not have known until now:
- They still have a store on Grea Portland Street, the location of their first-ever store.
- The company has been a staunch supporter of Comic Relief and has raised more than £5 million for the charity since 2008.
- Over the years, they have extended their product range and now even sell garden furniture.
- The printer ink they sell yearly would be enough to fill more than 10,000 bottles of wine with ink.
- The business stayed as a family firm from 1893 right up until 1972.
Stationery, office supplies, furniture and storage, ink and toners, paper and print, and electricals and tech are the main categories of products that the company sells, and this has increased in size from just stationery when it was first launched in 1893.
They have moved away from simple office supplies and now cater to home use. This is an expected move, as stationery is less commonly used in the digital age than it once was, so moving towards digital equivalents was always logical.
In another sign of keeping up with the times, they launched a direct mail order catalogue in 1996 and swiftly created an online store.
Office stationery, printer inks, and furniture remain among their biggest earners. Still, electrical home appliances such as televisions, computers, tablets, phones, CCTV systems, and many other digital devices are now available.
The company has a long and esteemed history since it was founded in 1893 by Henry J Ryman. His first store opened on Great Portland Street, and even then, it sold stationery. The company stayed in the Ryman family for many generations, with son Jack Ryman taking over the reins in 1931. Then, his sons Desmond and Nicholas started to steer the ship in 1951. After running the company for 21 years, the two brothers sold the business to the Urton Group for around £8 million in 1972.
After passing through several owners for the next twenty-odd years, current owner Theo Paphitis bought the company. Under his guidance, it has become more successful than ever.
