Discover Sheffield: Shops, Restaurants & Highlights

Known for its industrial heritage, especially its production of steel and cutlery, Sheffield is a cool and quirky city with a strong creative scene. Former industrial areas have been rejuvenated and are now trendy spots for restaurants and bars, while the city centre offers entertainment, markets, art galleries and high street shopping.

Shopping in Sheffield

Sheffield’s shopping experiences cover all preferences and budgets, from a huge mall with high-street and designer brands to cool vintage shops and independent boutiques.

Mainstream Shopping
The city centre’s pedestrianised street, Fargate, is traditionally where high-street shopping can be found. A minute’s walk away is The Moor, where more familiar brands have opened up in recent years to create a shopping hub.

Luxury Shopping
For upmarket boutiques and high-end shopping, Ecclesall Road, a short walk from The Moor, is a long and lively street with hidden gems and some familiar upscale stores.

Boutique Shops
Walk straight up from Fargate and you’ll reach Division Street, where independent boutiques and vintage shops offer a different shopping experience.

Shopping Centres & Retail Parks
In the Tinsley area of the city, Meadowhall, a large shopping mall, caters to shoppers of all needs, with designer stores and budget shops standing side by side. Out to south Sheffield, the Crystal Peaks shopping centre serves mostly locals, but it makes a good trip out for its excellent market. There’s also a big retail park here, as well as a smaller version on Kilner Way near Hillsborough.

Restaurants in Sheffield

Sheffield’s sprawling food scene spans right across the city, covering fine dining, fast food chains, and the biggest food hall in Europe. There’s something to suit all budgets and preferences, from family-run pizzerias to high-end foodie experiences.

Traditional Cuisine
Fargate and Leopold Square offer familiar chain restaurants, while on Division Street, traditional bars serve fish and chips and burger meals.

High-End Dining
For taster menus and fine foods, Kelham Island has some select dining spots, while Ecclesall Road, all the way along to Sharrow, features trendy, high-end restaurants.

Casual or Trendy Spots
Head up London Road for the best in takeaways and international snack bars, then carry on up to Abbeydale Road for trendy eateries and world foods. In the city centre, head to Cambridge Street for the biggest food hall in Europe.

Food Markets
The Moor Market is an indoor market with stalls selling fruit and vegetables, meat, and fish. It also has cafes and fast food outlets with a food hall vibe.

Landmarks and Attractions

Not known for being a tourist city, Sheffield has a surprising amount of interesting attractions and landmarks.

  • Botanical Gardens: Found behind Ecclesall Road, the park is a favourite picnic spot for locals.
  • Millennium Galleries: A small art gallery with winter gardens and workshops in the city centre.
  • Sheffield Cathedral: Located on Church Street, this impressive cathedral is free to enter.
  • Weston Park Museum: Just a short walk from town, on Western Bank, the museum features permanent and temporary displays.
Neighbourhoods in Sheffield

How to Get to Sheffield

Public Transport
Sheffield has a far-reaching tram system that can take you from the train station to Meadowhall, out to Crystal Peaks, and all the way to Hillsborough. The bus service is less reliable, but does serve all areas of the city. Trains travel from all major cities to Sheffield, with a good service from London.

Driving Directions
It is one of the easiest cities to reach from London, directly up the M1, taking around 3 hours. From Manchester, it takes an hour and a half and cuts through beautiful scenery in the Peak District, either on the Snake Pass or the Woodhead Pass.

Walking/Cycling
It’s easy to cycle around Sheffield and to walk from one part of town to another. Some areas are very hilly and difficult for anyone with mobility issues, and many attractions, bars and restaurants are sprawled across the city, but the city centre is compact and very walkable.

Parking in Sheffield

Parking can be found in NCP car parks in the city centre, and a small car park at the top of Division Street serves the centre well. It’s free to park at Meadowhall, making that an attractive option for shopping. Other areas, like Ecclesall Road, rely on meter parking on the roadside.
