Poundstretcher is a chain of discount stores in the UK. It operates more than 350 stores across major towns and cities. Some of these are its main line of stores, but it also operates Poundstretcher Extra stores, which are bigger shops.
They sell homeware, children’s toys and games, food and drinks, outdoor accessories, storage solutions, health and beauty products, clothing, and stationery. The stores sell largely unbranded products, but you can pick up items such as Disney toys in the children’s section and branded sweets and chocolates. They have a small refrigerated food section with milk, cheese, and essential household items. Interestingly, the company had a slight linguistic rebranding from “£-stretcher” to the current spelling of the business.
Their stores are well distributed throughout the UK. Cities with the most outlets include London, Glasgow, and Manchester.
Most of their stores are open seven days a week. Larger retail centres are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., while city centre stores may close around 5 p.m. On weekends, stores close at 6 p.m. on Saturdays and are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

Stephen Fearnley and Paul Appell founded Poundstretcher in 1981. Eight years later, the company became a subsidiary of a construction firm named Brown & Jackson plc, which then went on to be taken over by a South African retail giant, Pepkor. The new owners decided to release their subsidiaries apart from Poundstretcher. They attempted to rebrand the chain to “Instore.” However, the rebranding was unsuccessful, so they changed the branding. A series of slogan changes followed other rebranding modifications.
The company then progressed to buy other stores from closing retailers and groups going into administration. They also operate stores under the “Bargain Buys” brand. As of now, the company continues to trade under its original name.
