Nisa: Your Local Convenience Store in the UK
Nisa sells groceries to UK shoppers. They offer a variety of food and beverage products, from daily necessities like bread and milk to ingredients for main meals and treats. They also combine some of their items to produce "meal deals" for convenient meal planning. They operate solely in the United Kingdom and supply over 4,000 stores spread across villages, towns, and cities. Their stores are divided into two types: Nisa Local stores, which stock their full range, and Nisa Extra stores, which have a more limited selection. These stores are designed for shoppers grabbing essentials in a rush, such as those at service stations.
Most of Nisa’s 4,000-plus stores are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday. On Sundays, opening times slightly change as they tend to open one hour later in most locations. However, it is always best to check with your local store to find their exact opening times. This is especially true on bank holidays and on New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Christmas, and Boxing Day, when Nisa opening times are likely to change or the store may be closed.
Most of their stores are in London, Leeds, and Birmingham, but they have many more throughout the UK. Their stores are easy to recognize by their simple logo: the company name written in purple text, with a yellow streak extending from the top of the "I" to the end of the word instead of a dot.
We often think we know a lot about the companies we shop at, but that's not always the case. Here are five interesting facts you might not be aware of:
- Originally called Nisa-Today's, they rebranded to a single word to be more memorable.
- As a symbol group, they work with local businesses to promote local initiatives.
- They supply more than 4,000 convenience shops, many of which are franchises or sell their products alongside other stock.
- It all began in 1977 with a chance meeting between two men at a hotel who saw a market for a retail outlet.
- They have won awards for their environmentally friendly supply chain operations.
As mentioned, they offer the usual foods and beverages found in many supermarkets. They provide items from well-known brands and more wallet-friendly options from lesser-known brands. Examples of their stock include meat, fruit and vegetables, biscuits, crisps, and snacks. They also have a selection of convenience foods, including ready meals. One of their green curry meals was awarded a prize for being one of the best convenience foods brought to market that year.
Their meal deals are among their most popular bundles. They combine items such as mains with sides and drinks at discounted prices to make planning family meals less stressful and simpler. Recently, they have merged with the Co-operative Group and now stock many of the same groceries as their new partner.
Nisa was formed by Mr. Peter Garvin and Mr. Dudley Ramsden back in 1977. Mr. Garvin was a retailer from Yorkshire, and Mr. Ramsden was a wholesaler with a rich family history in owning a supermarket. Initially, the company was named The Northern Independent Supermarkets Association and looked after 30 different retailers.
Actually, Mr. Garvin had established the company earlier as a means to compete with big supermarkets but struggled to make it successful without his partner's help. Mr. Ramsden bumped into Mr. Garvin at a hotel event and believed the venture was promising enough to succeed. Today, they have partnered with the Co-operative Group to stock their food and have numerous suppliers feeding more than 4,000 stores and their local communities.
