Matalan: One of the UK’s Best-Known Value Retailers
One of the UK’s best-known value retailers, Matalan sells good-quality fashion and homeware products at some of the most competitive prices in Britain. Matalan is known for a wide range of clothing items for men, women, and children of all ages, including jeans, tops, and other casual wear. It also supplies homeware products for every room in the home and even the garden. This may involve decorative items or small-to-medium-sized furniture.
Electrical appliances, lighting options, toys, and games are just some of the other categories that you can expect to see at your local Matalan. In addition to shopping at more than 200 branches, Matalan sells its products online and delivers all over the UK.
Matalan is generally found in shopping centres, retail parks, industrial estates and on the high street in most major cities and towns in the UK. There are around 227 branches of the popular budget retailer, so most people in Britain will not be too far from a local establishment. Their simple yet effective logo will be instantly recognizable whether you are approaching on foot or in the car, and many of their larger establishments will provide ample parking for their customers.
Matalan’s opening times are gernarally 9 AM to 8 PM from Monday to Friday. On Saturdays, it opens at 9 AM but closes slightly earlier, at 7 PM. Matalan is also open on Sundays, from 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Be sure to check the opening times of your local establishment in our branch locator.
Expect opening times to differ on holidays such as Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and over Easter on Good Friday and Easter Monday.
Matalan is fairly young compared to many other successful retail stores in the UK, and this shows how quickly it has grown. However, here are five things that not many people know about Matalan:
- There are over 30 international branches of Matalan
- In 2004, Matalan partnered with the NSPCC and has raised more than £10m for the children’s charity as of 2018
- Matalan currently has a workforce of more than 13,000 employees
- Founder John Hargreaves left school at 14 to run a market stall
- The inspiration for Matalan was found during a visit to a Walmart store in America
Utilizing a similar approach to the “stack it high, sell it low” budget retailers in the US, Matalan has become one of the leading value retailers on the streets of the UK. It stocks and sells a wide range of goods that are bought at the same prices as other major outlets but sold at a cheaper price.
Their clothing lines are probably the most popular category of products sold in the store, with families often kitting themselves out on the cheap, whether it is school uniforms, sportswear, casual wear or office wear. As for their homeware categories, customers are able to pick up good quality bedding, electrical appliances, tableware, cooking utensils and even toys and games for the kids.
Already known for offering fantastic prices, Matalan also runs regular sales and promotions in its brick-and-mortar stores and online.
Matalan was founded in 1985 by John Hargreaves, a man who had initially left school at 14 years old in order to run a market stall. Hargreaves had a great eye for a bargain and quickly mastered the art of buying and selling at the right prices. He quickly built a network of market stalls before first dipping his toes into stores when he opened his first one called Matalan in 1985. This would eventually lead to a chain of 30 stores that was bringing in a combined £10 million annually.
While already successful, in 1985, Hargreaves decided to build a Walmart-style store in the UK, and this chain of stores would lead to incredible wealth. Within just 10 years, the chain expanded to 90+ stores, a number that has more than doubled in the years since.
