Home Bargains: The UK’s Fastest Growing Discount Retailer
Home Bargains is a chain of discount retail stores in the UK that has grown rapidly since its creation in 1976. Selling a wide range of more than 4,000 products in the homeware, garden, electronics, health & beauty, baby & child, pets, fragrances, food, stationery, and toys & games categories, there is not much that cannot be found at a great price at Home Bargains. The first store was set up in Liverpool, but today, there are more than 575 Home Bargains stores in the UK, with this number increasing all the time. Many of these stores are established at retail parks where they have been able to maximise their space to offer a broader range of products to the public.
As you might expect, Liverpool has the most Home Bargains stores, but it is closely followed by other major cities such as Glasgow, Manchester, and London. The eye-catching red and blue branding makes identifying one of these stores, whether on the high street, in shopping centres, retail parks, or in arcades, easy.
Home Bargains opening times are pretty much the same at all stores except in certain circumstances. Home Bargains opening times are usually between 8 am and 8 pm during weekdays, 8 am and 6 pm on Saturdays, and 10 am and 4 pm on Sundays. To meet local regulations, you should expect Home Bargains opening times to change on Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, and all bank holidays. You can find the Home Bargains opening times for a branch close to you on the online store locator.
Home Bargains has only been around for a relatively short amount of time, which just shows what a meteoric rise the company has enjoyed, but there are some facts that many may still not know:
- Home Bargains is the UK’s highest-ranked discount retailer according to ‘Which?’ magazine.
- Founder Tom Morris, aged just 21 then, used a bank overdraft to open his first store in 1976.
- He still runs the company today, and it is now worth more than £2 billion.
- Home Bargains sponsored Tranmere Rovers Football Club in Liverpool between 2013 and 2016.
- Home Bargains purchases its stock directly from manufacturers and sells it to the public at a lower price by making use of bulk-buying and efficient operations.
Home Bargains sells a range of household brands in the UK at a far cheaper price than can be found in supermarkets and other high-street chains. These include home appliances, food, health and hygiene products, fragrances, pet foods, flowers, and games. Home Bargains is able to negotiate volume discounts and pick up end-of-line options for clearance prices to resell.
Appliances and electronic goods, in particular, are popular here, with television sets, DVD players, stereos, game consoles, and computers all available at great prices. Home Bargains also sells a collection of toys, which makes it a great option when Christmas comes around as the savings made on presents for children are excellent.
Home Bargains really does have a brief history, considering that its first store opened in 1976. This is not too long ago compared to other high street chains that have been around for over a century. Just a year after opening his first store, Tom Morris and Home and Bargain, as the store was initially called, were enjoying 20–25% growth on an annual basis. Tom Morris opened the first store with a bank overdraft and has gone from strength to strength based on his ability to give the customers what they want.
Growth since then has been fast and furious. Just over 40 years later, there are now over 575 stores and no sign of the company slowing down. In fact, they aim to have closer to 800 stores by the time 2025 rolls in. A business model that focuses on selling only top brands but at low prices has served Home Bargains extremely well, and could a slogan of “Top Brands—Bottom Prices” be more apt?
