Clarks: A British Shoe Manufacturer and Retailer
Founded in the 19th century, C. & J. Clark International Ltd. is a shoe manufacturer and retailer more frequently known as Clarks. The company was conceived in Somerset, England, and started business in Britain before expanding globally to become the multinational corporation it is today.
The company sells more than 50 million pairs of shoes annually and remains one of the top shoe retailers. Their focus is “everyday shoes,” providing comfort, an excellent fit, classic styling, and good looks. All of their shoes and boots are made from high-quality materials, and each comes with a label explaining what each part is made from. This immaculate attention to detail is one of the reasons why the brand has been a firm favourite for many decades. Their range of shoes is aimed at men, women, and children. They are swamped before the new school year starts when kids get their new formal shoes ready for the year ahead.
There are about 500 Clarks stores in the UK; most locations are hosted in London, Manchester, and Birmingham.

Although they sell a wide range of shoes for men, women, and children, they are best known for the latter. Over the years, parents looking for school shoes have turned to this retailer first, and they now have a reputation for selling hard-wearing shoes with an exemplary fit. The latter is partly due to the quality of the in-store fitters, who are comprehensively trained to check the fit of the child’s shoe properly.
They are one of the few shoe manufacturers that offers half sizes left. Their footwear also comes in different widths, which can be helpful for children and those with particularly narrow or wide feet.
It began in Somerset in 1825 with the Clark brothers, Cyrus & James. The brothers made a strong start. James learned the trade and quickly developed a trendy design. By 1833, they were trading as a true business, and things were going well. However, by 1863, the company had taken a turn for the worse and faced bankruptcy.
Luckily, the shoemaker was saved by the local Quaker community, which bailed them out financially. One of the bailout conditions was that the business provided social initiatives to the local community, a pledge they stuck to. Success returned, and by 1903, the set-up was changed to a private limited company, which is still in place today.
Over the coming decades, the company produced several iconic designs and developed shoe-fitting technology far superior to the rest of the market. Alongside their flourishing business in the UK, they expanded worldwide and today have more than 1,400 branded stores worldwide, including the US.
