A Brief History

Carphone Warehouse was founded as a mobile retail establishment in 1989 by Charles Dunstone and Julian Brownlie, who put an initial £6,000 of their savings into the business. A third partner, David Ross, joined the company in 1990 and oversaw a rapid expansion throughout the 1990s which eventually led to the £9 million acquisition of the American company Tandy. Other acquisitions followed in the form of Opal Telecom in 2002 and internet-access business from AOL in 2006 – the latter of which was purchased for £370 million. In 2018, a 50% share of Carphone Warehouse’s retail business was purchased by Best Buy for £1.1 billion. The company then merged with Dixons retail to become Dixons Carphone in 2014 and has an annual net income of £386 million.
